Ruby-topaz hummingbird (Chrysolampis mosquitus) is a small sized bird roughly 8.1cm, found in Bonaire, the Caribbean islands of the Lesser Antilles, tropical northern South America, Southern to Central Brazil, Northern Bolivia and Columbia to Southern Panama.
Their habitats are gardens, open country like the “Kunuku” of Bonaire. They are very small birds weighing a whopping 3.5g and have a short straight black bill. They are, however, fairly large in relation to the other hummingbird species, bigger than the Blue-Tailed Emerald, the other type of hummingbird found on Bonaire. Both males and females have reddish round shaped tails. The males have a golden-orange throat and breast with a reddish head. The Males can appear dark but will flash their colors if positioned in the sunlight.
The females have dark bronze-green backs and pale grey underparts. They can typically lay two eggs, in a very small nest they construct which looks like a tiny cup. They like to eat nectar from the local flowers and also small insects. For more info about birding on Bonaire, take a look at the Birds of Bonaire site.
