Marine Life

Australian Museum. With the amazing wealth of wildlife that we have in Fiji, you will probably need help with identifying it all. Now you can find out online what that fish was, at the Australian Museum's Fish Site. The site allows viewers to search its database of fish in the South Pacific by scientific name or common name and also provides a step-by-step key, designed to help you identify even the most obscure fish.

Administered by the American Elasmobranch Society and the Florida Museum of Natural History, the International Shark Attack File is a compilation of all known shark attacks. Besides general information for the curious, a wealth of useful information and interesting summaries are offered here. The site provides geographic summaries of attacks (Fiji has 4% of the world's attacks), statistical trends of shark attacks since 1900, annual worldwide shark attack summaries (including the 2000 summary), and much more. We should all note the page of tips on how to minimise the risk of an attack.

Marine Science

Landfill sites - This is a paper Peter Forster wrote, specifically about the Lami landfill site in Fiji and its effects on the adjacent marine environment. However, it is relevant to landfill sites located next to the sea, wherever they are and makes interesting reading for anyone thinking of diving near Suva.

Marine Pollution: Human and Domestic Wastes - this is a paper Marijke wrote on the serious problems human and domestic wastes cause to the marine environment . It describes the magnitude of the problems in the Pacific and explains how the pollutants affect the pH, the salinity of the seawater and marine resources. Several possible solutions to this pollution problem are also discussed.

Census of Marine Life Portal website - The Census itself is a global network of researchers from more than 45 nations currently engaged in a ten-year initiative "to assess and explain
the diversity, distribution, and abundance of marine life in the oceans- past, present, and future."
